Details

'In terms of this basic ground, the entry point is relaxation because it’s described as being naked, that is to say it has no covering or any kind of protective layer; it’s just open and available. Aware is aware is aware, like a mirror. The mirror has no bouncers in front of it. It’s got no border guards. It’s immediate. Float something in front of it and immediately the reflection is there. So on that level of openness there is no defence.' James Low

In meditation we practice to be present with whatever shows up, including sensations or thoughts. But what shows up 'inside' of us, never shows up on our own - we are always part of the world. And what shows up in the world could be the sound of birdsong or noises like the screeching of cars or chain saws ...

The image of the mirror is used to describe how everything appears - yet the mirror remains untouched. Far from an image of aloofness, this is a teaching on the inherent non-duality of what seems to be inside or outside. This teaching shows us how we and the world arise together, and that the separation between self and other is essentially empty.

How can we live from that - and how can we find the ease that this teaching promises: allowing everything to be exactly as it is, and being fully present with it: touched, all the time, yes - but not back off or close down to protect ourselves...

This course will be an opportunity to explore the teachings on ease and freedom in the Buddhist tradition, including from the view and practice of dzogchen, as taught by James Low. There will be introductions and some practical exercises and meditation in order to absorb something of the flavour of the teachings. We will look at some specific teachings and practices, like

  • the image of the mirror

  • how to find relaxed presence, even if the mind is busy - or events are disturbing?

  • we will especially look at practices of holding, opening, receiving

The course is an opportunity for participants to deepen their practice. There will be plenty of opportunity for interaction and discussion. This, hopefully, will help us all to deepen our practice. We can form a community with a some supportive practices for people concerned with the present situation of the world, the increasing self-interest and splitting between groups, and the isolation from the living world.

From 8 October to the 17 December, we will meet as a group every two weeks on Thursday, 6:30 - 8:30 UK time. You will also receive regular impulses from me via email: something to read or listen to, to enrich your day, or a little task to take for a walk in nature (also possible in the city!). There will be small assignments or images that you can allow to speak to you ... it will be full of surprises! - And there will be the opportunity for weekly meetings with a partner in the course, and, if you wish, at times, 1-to-1 with me.

Come along, and pass it on to others! Please contact me via email to let me know you are interested, or with any questions. Register here to take part..

The courses and retreats I offer through this website Play of Now, in person and online, are the main way I support myself financially. In order to continue these offers, I am asking for some financial support/donations. You are free to give what you can - a suggestion I would make is between £120 - £240 for the course. I am aware some people might not be able to give that, and so, I want to invite you to come and give what you are able to offer. On the other hand, some people might be able to offer a bit more, and that would help someone to attend who cannot give so much. The bank details will be given on the email you receive from zoom on signing up. It would help me if you could send your contribution before we start – thank you.

I look forward to exploring more in your company!
